Hendra Gunawan is a figure of a modern Indonesian maestro artist whose works including unique and character. His exploration of painting techniques, the application of colors, composition and themes; starting from revolutionary struggle, family, traditional rituals to women directly or indirectly form special narratives and discourses. So it's no wonder the works of Hendra Gunawan have contributed and a great inheritance to the journey of modern art in Indonesia.

Hendra Gunawan was born in Bandung, West Java, June 11, 1918. He learned to paint from Wahdi Sumanta (1917-1996) and Affandi (1907-1990). In 1935, Hendra with Sudarso (1914-2006) and Barli Sasmitawinata (born 1921), joining the two teachers to form 'Group of Five' in Bandung. Hendra also supports the theater group 'Poesaka Soenda' in Bandung, especially as decorating painter in 1940. After independence, Hendra was involved in establishing the organization 'Pelukis Rakyat' in Yogyakarta in 1947. Hendra Gunawan was imprisoned by the New Order without trial period, after the events of the 1965 human tragedy. Previously, since 1957 Hendra had became an activist at the People's Culture Institute (Lekra). Hendra was released from detention in the year 1978 and decided to stay in Bali. Hendra's paintings are known for their portrayals strong about the daily lives of the people of Indonesia. Hendra died in Denpasar in 1983.

Even though Hendra Gunawan's paintings depart from daily life or reality but his artistic behavior evolved towards an imaginary, poetic, dramatic depiction of the world even surreal.
 
Contemporary art exhibition "SPEKTRUM Hendra Gunawan" will be part of Mr. Ciputra's museum exhibition collection to commemorate 100 Years of Hendra Gunawan. This exhibition invites contemporary artists, to give an idea of ​​influence or the values ​​of Hendra Gunawan in the development of art in Indonesia in various aspects such as the relation to the formal value of art: shape, color and composition. As well as narratives who covered it.

The works of contemporary artists can be in the form of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, video and more.
